Liverpool ONE becomes first retail destination to unveil pioneering recycling facility
Grosvenor has announced that Liverpool ONE is introducing a pioneering new sustainability facility with the installation of an innovative Mobile Segregation Unit (MSU). A first in the industry, the patented MSU process will significantly boost recycling rates across Liverpool ONE, with the destination aiming to achieve a recycling rate of 90% of waste by 2025, significantly improving on the current rate of 41%, and 46% higher than the UK average[1].
Supplied by The Green Block, the MSU allows for the sorting of co-mingled waste into fifteen individual waste streams instead of the current five, meaning more items will be recycled, and allowing brands a better range of recycling options for commercial waste. The MSU also enables the digital tracking of waste which became UK law in April 2024 and mandatory by April 2025, and provides access to real time waste data via its technology system, Plaza.
The MSU has previously only been used at major transport hubs in the UK, so the launch of the Liverpool ONE facility marks the first-ever of its kind at a retail-led destination and reemphasises the destination’s long-standing dedication to sustainability. Liverpool ONE has consistently met industry standards on waste management and maintained a ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ status. Each year, Liverpool ONE keeps 2,560 tonnes of waste out of landfill, efforts which will be further bolstered by the MSU.

The new MSU is the latest in a series of commercial sustainability initiatives undertaken by Liverpool ONE since opening, including the installation of solar panels, 80,000 bees being housed on the roof, and two ‘bug hotels’ on Chavasse Park to encourage biodiversity. Chavasse Park is also consistently awarded the Green Flag award for being one of the UK’s best-maintained green spaces.
